The Chief Executive of ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), Helen Brand will pay an official visit to Mauritius on 9 and 10 August 2012.
The visit, which demonstrates the importance of Mauritius to ACCA, the global body for professional accountants, is also highly symbolic for Helen Brand (picture), as she was involved in the setting up of the ACCA Mauritius Office in the year 2000.
During her visit, Helen Brand will have meetings and courtesy calls with top Mauritian officials and with ACCA partners in the accountancy profession and in training.
She will also host this year’s ACCA New Members Ceremony. This annual event is a celebration by ACCA Mauritius of the successful ACCA affiliates who have achieved the requested standards and have been recently admitted as ACCA Members.
Under Helen Brand’s direction, ACCA, which has more than 80 offices and centres over 170 countries, serving 154,000 members and 432,000 students, offers business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.
Helen Brand is particularly interested in the development of the accountancy profession in emerging economies and has considerable experience and knowledge of the 170 markets in which ACCA currently operates.
She has worked closely with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) in an advisory capacity and served on the Supervisory Board of the Prince of Wales´ Accounting for Sustainability (A4S) forum.
Helen Brand has also been appointed as a member of the Governance Committee of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC).
Helen Brand was awarded an OBE in the Queen´s Birthday Honours list in June 2011 for services to accountancy.
In May 2012, Helen Brand received an honorary degree from BPP University College, as a Doctor of Business Administration, in recognition of her services to the development of education and training for the accountancy profession.
Helen Brand has built her career in professional accountancy bodies. Prior to joining ACCA in 1996 as Head of International Development, Helen Brand had risen to become Director, International Affairs at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) an organisation she joined direct from university in 1987.
During her career at ACCA, Helen Brand gained a broad strategic and operational knowledge of the global accountancy body, firstly leading ACCA’s corporate development team; becoming chief operating officer in 2002; managing director – operations in 2004, before becoming managing director – strategy and development, in 2007.
Helen Brand has an honours degree in politics from Exeter University, where she was President of the Students’ Union.
