Dr Maurice Curé State College wins the 2015 Omnicane Award

Dr Maurice Curé State College is the winner of the 2015 Omnicane Award. The results were made official during a ceremony held at Holiday Inn Mauritius Airport, Mon Trésor, Plaine Magnien this Tuesday 22 September 2015. Her Excellency Dr. (Mrs.) Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, GCSK, CSK, PhD, President of the Republic, graced the function as chief guest.

Her Excellency Dr (Mrs.) Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, GCSK, CSK, PhD, presented the trophy to the members of the winning team – Toushita Ramchurn, Mélanie Lim Moy Hian, Aluncia Armance, Ishta Moloo and Lenika Tannoo.

They each received a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and a souvenir trophy. A challenge trophy was presented to the winning college. The theme of the competition was: “A critical review of the role of sports in today’s Mauritian society. How best can we instil and promote its associated ethos in fostering responsible citizenship and in cementing nation building ties?”

The jury was composed of Mr. Michael Glover – CEO, Trust Fund for Excellence in Sports – Chairperson of the jury, Mrs. Josiane Nairac Boullé – Chairperson, organising committee of the second African Cadets Athletics Championships of the African Confederation of Athletics, Mauritius, 23-26 April 2015, and Mr. Daniel Capiron – Member 'High Level Sports Unit,' Ministry of Youth & Sports.

The second prize went to John Kennedy College. The team members were Damon Duchenne, Azhar Bhuheekhan, Daren Ramsamy, Narshvin Doorganah and Sanjeeven Saminaden. They each received a cash prize of Rs 8,000 and a souvenir trophy was handed to the team.

Taking into account the high level shown by various other teams, three special prizes were also awarded as follows: Gaëtan Raynal State College whose team comprised Shabneez Bibi Shabnam Bhunnoo, Ruqayya Bibi Umme Elaheebocus, Dilasha Devi Jhurree, Laksha Ramsurun and Kareeshinee Samdeo Rai Pulton, France Boyer de la Giroday State Secondary School whose team comprised of B. Azeemah Chundoo, Lovishka Soondur, Shrivalli Baboolall, Riana Telescourt and Ishta Babooram, and Royal College Curepipe whose team comprised of Abhay Omdutt Canoo, Dharish Goorcharran, Abhaye Callicharan, Tiruthraj Ramdany and Yogesh Ramessur
